If you've been spying closely on us, you may have already seen Sam's face all done up a la Rick Genest (zombie boy). If not, well, you should know that I'm not the only one here that's been hanging out in crazy makeup.

Later tomorrow-- our Halloween lookbook will be posted!

232: what a drag

I totally "jo calderone-d" half of my face today. & I may or may not look completely insane.

For now, I'm just gonna say that this was indeed halloween related.
& it's okay if you have a crush on my male alter-ego. hahaha

185: tutorial - smokey eye makeup

Okay, a LOT of you guys have been bugging me to do a smokey eye makeup tutorial for years but I'm not a makeup expert by any means (just an enthusiast)! I'll just show you what I personally do & what my favourite products are! WARNING: This is picture-heavy & lengthy!

Just as a primer here, I've got single eyelids or monolids which is primarily an East Asian feature. Unfortunately, most makeup tutorials are geared towards double eyelids & most instructionals revolve around accentuating a "crease" which I don't have! When I was younger, I was a bit self-conscious about my eyes because of this but I've learned to embrace my features. yay! So this tutorial is for what I like to call a "panda-eye" cause it's a lot of black all around your lids.

Here's the look we're going for. It's basically my everyday eye, which most people think is actually really dramatic, but it's what I've found works for me & accentuates my eye shape the best.

Whenever I'm teaching my friends the first things about makeup, there's one thing I like to point out-- Makeup is supposed to accentuate your features. By using dark colours, you are creating DEPTH in your face & by using light colours you are bringing features FORWARD. soooo:

dark colours = pushes features back
light colours = brings features forward.

That's why some people use bronzy colours in the hollows of their cheeks to create a high cheekbone look. Get it? But you can't just slap stuff on your face, you've gotta blend it. So that's why we're putting a ton of black around our eyes now-- it'll create depth & ~mystery~~~.
OKAY, let's move forward with the tutorial.

WHAT YOU'LL NEED:
- Urban Decay Primer Potion
- Makeup Brushes (eyeshadow brush, packing brush, angled brush & smudger brush)
- 3 or 4 eyeshadow colours (details in next photo)
- Dior Diorshow Waterproof Mascara
- MAC fluidline eyeliner in blacktrack
- Shu Uemura Eyelash Curler

WHY DO YOU NEED FOUR EYESHADOWS?!
I mean, you could go & just use black, but I find that blending something solid black into your skin is difficult! You don't necessarily need to use the same colours that I used, so I'll break down what each is for:
Yellow (Mac Eyeshadow in Going Bananas) - Highlighter for the browbone. You can use any eyeshadow that is lighter than your skintone. Soft whites, nudes & creams are awesome for this.
Purple (Urban Decay matte Eyeshadow in Purple Haze) - The colour that helps blend between the browbone & smokeyness. I love deep rich hues for this. Dark greys & rich jewel tones are usually what I use cause they blend well with black.
Black (Urban Decay Loose Pigment in Rockstar) - the smokeyness baby!
Silver (Urban Decay Eyeshadow in S&M) - another highlighter for the corner of the eye. Bright whites & silvers work well.

Start off with a clean, moisturized face.
Yes, I do sometimes get asked if I'm 16.

Fill in your brows using an angled brush & brow powder about a shade lighter than your brow hairs. With my bare face, my brows do seem a bit dark and angry, but they're necessary to balance out heavy eye makeup.

Take your Urban Decay Primer Potion & put a small dab on each eyelid & just blend on the entire lid with your finger. Don't forget to put some under your eye as well! This primer acts to increase the colour payoff of your shadows & increase the lasting power. It'll make your eyeshadow last all day & night & prevent that gross creasing. I swear by it!

Take whatever colour you are using as your brow highlight & apply from the eyebrow down. You want to use a colour just a touch lighter than your skintone because you want to bring your browbone forward.

Next, put on the blending colour all over the lid. It's a bit messy. oh well.

Then use your darkest colour & follow the lower lash line out in a sort of "cat-eye". This defines the lower & outside corner of where you want the black shadow to go.

Then pack on the black shadow on the upper lid. The shape really depends on your own eye shape. & don't worry too much about the blunt lines right now, just pack the shadow on first.

Then taking a smudger brush, just smudge the black shadow into the purple (or whatever colour you're using). My smudging job was terrible, but you get the point.

Then taking your highlight colour, just highlight the inner corner of your eyes. This helps to open & brighten up your eyes.

You'll notice that even though you're done putting on all the eyeshadows, your eye still looks incomplete! That's because you really need to fill in your lash line with eyeliner. I line the waterline on the top & bottom with MAC fluidline eyeliner in blacktrack. It's super easy to use-- an angled brush gives you a lot of control & you can just dab it along. It's way less messy than liquid liner brushes & lasts long too!

& last but not least, finish with an eyelash curler (walk it up along your lashes to get a nice curl) & some mascara!

& there you go! That's it. That's all my secrets revealed.
Basically everytime I do makeup on myself or Samantha, it's a variation of this in different colours. haha enjoy. Let me know if you have any questions & I'll try to answer them in the comments!

155: tutorial - eyelash extensions

READ THIS: THIS IS AN OLD TUTORIAL FROM MY OLD BLOG! The photos & text below are OLD but the instructions still apply. I just wanted to share this tutorial with you because it's something fun & easy to do! So here it is:

I figured since I was going to do this anyway-- I might as well take pics while I did it :) My pics are a bit hack & I was low on lashes but hopefully this ends up being somewhat helpful.

First of all, here's a short explanation on what I'm doing!
Instead of strip lashes, which are typically stuck on with strip lash glue & can be removed at the end of the night, I discovered individual lashes. These are lashes that are stuck on with a semi-permanent adhesive (that can be removed with the special remover solution). I have found that they're much more comfortable than strip lashes because they are stuck onto your actual lashes rather than on the skin of your eyelid. Anyway, these are a more long term solution for those of us with short, sparse lashes because these stay glued to your lashes until your real lashes fall out.

Here's my own before & after:

Now let's move onto the how-to!

What you'll need:
- tweezers
- ardell lashtite lash glue for individual lashes (in clear)
- individual lashes (they come in small clusters & I typically buy ardell "short black flare") but these quo ones are comparable.
- magnifying mirror (if you need it!)
- a steady hand & patience, if it's your first time!

First thing you do is grab your tweezers & carefully pick up a cluster of lashes. Then take the knotted end & dip it into the glue.

On the instructions, they advise you to dump some glue out onto a piece of foil so dipping is easier, but I've found that to be a bit wasteful because the glue dries quickly! I just tip my little vial of glue to the side & dip in the knot.

Now you should have a small bead of glue on the end of the lashes! and nooooo glue on your tweezers (or the lashes will stick to your tweezers instead of on you!)

People always ask if you should put the lashes on top or under your lashes... my answer is: in BETWEEN! There's tons of rows of lashes when you look really closely... so take the dipped lash cluster & stick it in the center part of your eye (I just start in the centre cause... I dunno why.)

Once you've gently placed the lash amongst your real lashes, take your tweezers and give your lashes surrounding the cluster a *squeeze*. This will press your lashes to the bead of glue so that it's stuck in there.. but make sure to avoid squeezing the glue (or the tweezers will just lift the cluster away)

You'll want to try and get the glob of glue touching as many of your lashes as possible. This will ensure that the cluster stays on your lashes more securely, for longer & it will anchor it in place better so it doesn't twist around.

Just work your way to the outer corner of your eye, one cluster at a time.

You'll notice that you may have left gaps, but you can always throw in more clusters! Typically I have used anywhere between 9 to 15 clusters on each of my eyes, it just depends on how full you want your lashes to look in the end!
[disclaimer: I'm a bit stupid & continued doing this even though I only had 13 clusters left so this turned out a bit sparse, but I'll likely grab more lashes tomorrow]

Anyways, that's my mostly done lashes... (clearly, there's some emptier areas but I'm sure you get the point!)
You can buy different lengths of lashes-- & stick the shorter ones towards the inner corner of your eye, but I usually buy one length & then trim the ones in the inner corner very carefully :)

After that-- you're done!

side view!

Then just throw on your makeup & skip the mascara step!!

In the past, I've put on my lashes & then lost about one cluster every 2 or 3 days. When that happens, I just take a new cluster & glue it in its place! With that system-- I've managed to keep eyelash extensions in for about 4 months! haha
You just have to remember not to rub your eyes & it may take getting used to when washing your face or showering.

PROS:
- long, thick, curled lashes ALWAYS
- saves you time & money on mascara application
- no mascara smudgies or racoon eyes!
- unlike strip lashes, you can't feel them on

CONS:
- you can NOT rub your eyes. You risk ripping them out! It only takes a couple of days to get used to being gentle around your eyes though... the most difficult times are when you're showering & when you're waking up.
- they cannot be removed without the proper solution. If you feel like pulling them out, your lashes are gonna go too
- eye makeup removal can be tricky. You have to work gently & you cannot use cream or oil based removers.

These might not be for everybody since some might think they're high-maintenance but whenever I have the time, I love to 'install' a set to feel just a bit more glam :)

153: cargo lash activator night review

I know that like myself, there are a lot of gals out there that are looking to get fuller, longer lashes. We all go through crazy mascara routines & I've even experimented with semi-permanent eyelash extensions, which I loved. I had never tried any eyelash growth formulas though!

I was recently doing one of my cousin's makeup & she told me about Cargo's Lash Activator Night.

She had a full & unused tube and offered to let me have it to try out. She wasn't even really sure about what it did, so I was excited to research the product online before I gave it a shot. Here's the description I found:

LashActivator, the innovative lash boosting mascara/primer that's become an international sensation is now available in a revolutionary clear night conditioner to give women even more of what they want-- long, sexy eyelashes.
LashActivator Night is a revolutionary nighttime elixir clinically proven to stimulate lashes at the lash bed for visibly longer, fuller and more lush lashes. Designed to be worn overnight, this clear elixir is proven to promote vitality and reduces lash loss. The safe, non-irritating formula shows a 169% improvement over natural growth rates over a 30-day period. It stimulates the microcirculation of the lash follicles, promotes lash vitality and provides better anchorage of lashes to the eye lids minimizing lash loss. (can be worn day or night)
How it works:
Lash follicles go through three stages: growth phase (lashes grow), transitional phase (lashes stop growing), and rest phase (lashes shed). As we age the rest phase increases, therefore shortening the growth phase. This multi-faceted lash-enhancing complex improves the quality of the growth phase while delaying the onset of the rest phase.

Directions
Three Ways to Boost Your Lashes:
Apply overnight as a lash enhancing elixir.
Apply as a primer with your favorite Cargo mascara.
Apply LashActivator Night together with LashActivator for visibly excellerated results!

That's a lot of claims! Apparently this formula works miracles, so I figured that I would give it a try for 30 days.

It's pretty simple-- you just apply it before you go to bed each night. I found the formula to be a bit watery, so it took a bit of time for it to dry.

Here are the before & after results:

DAY 1

DAY 30

In my photos, I'm not wearing any mascara or eye makeup in either & the difference is hardly noticeable at all. Even when I have the photos on my computer & I flip back and forth between them, I just see the tiiiiiniest bit of growth & maybe a couple extra lashes in there. Maybe my lashes are healthier or more voluminous, but the results on my naked lashes is barely worth the effort.

On the other hand, they suggest that this elixir can be used as a primer for your lashes. When I tried it out with my regular makeup routine, I found that the watery formula just straightened out my eyelashes that I just painstakingly curled. The liquid is so wet that even if it did help add length or volume, it didn't matter cause it made my lashes droop down :(
BUT! I found that when I used it each night, it must have been leaving a bit of a coat on my lashes. Without any changes to my eye makeup routine otherwise, I did notice that my lashes began looking longer when my mascara was applied. So I suppose it worked as a primer.... that you apply 12 hours before you do your makeup?

TL;DR:
Would I buy it again? nope.
Will I finish using this free tube? yupperz.

I know some of you have asked me for an eye makeup tutorial... are you guys interested in my makeup adventures for real? Cause I can post my old eyelash extension tutorial and stuff if you want! haha, let me know.

050: garage GLAMorous

Today at periwinkle:

fur stole made by me, zara floral cardigan, green chiffon shirt & harem pants from ub

fur & florals

a peek of the easter window display at periwinkle on bloor! nothing better to get you in the mood for spring than pastel coloured pom poms!

Alsoooo, today Sam picked up the Viva Glam "GAGA 2" lipstick & lipglass today!

I was SO excited to hear that Gaga was doing a second Viva Glam Campaign with MAC Cosmetics. For those that don't know, MAC has a line of lipsticks that are made entirely for a charitable cause. Every cent of the selling price of each lipstick & lipglass is donated to MAC aids fund. They often do celebrity endorsed campaigns that feature colours that are made in limited runs, which is why I missed out on the last gaga lipstick! :(
I was SOOO pumped that this one was going to be a nude colour too! I'm usually a heavy eye-makeup kinda gal, so I like peach & nude lip finishes. aaaaaand I'm so happy that the lipstick is in the amplified creme finish-- super moisturizing for a lipstick!

I'll finish this post with two (very different) awesome videos I watched today:

Do you guys remember the days when the release of a music video was a huuuge deal? Are any of you old enough for that? I remember the anticipation leading up to a new music release-- the days before digital downloads & youtube... we would actually have to wait by the tv or radio to hear the latest singles. (and record them on cassette tape or on vhs! ahaha)
