Like Syl mentioned...life has been hectic for us and we've fallen behind on our blogging habits!

Chictopia shipped us a package of Vidal Sassoon Pro Series products and I was so excited I could have hugged the mail lady! I've tried a few of the products and I can truly say that I was very impressed.


I've had super long hair for the majority of my life with the exception of my high school days of super short hair! Nowadays I sport a side shave and have lacked a side of hair for the past FIVE years! My issue is that my hair suffers a lot of trauma from being tied up in ponytails and buns and caught in my hair ties. My favourite way to wear my hair is down but sometimes it just looks damaged from all the frizz unless I straighten it with a flat iron.







What I Wore:

My favourite product was Extreme Smooth Combing Crème. I tested out the combing creme after my shower and it felt amazing in my hair. I have the tendency to neglect my hair and let it get all tangled but when i combed this creme through my hair and let it air-dry - it was SO smooth and straight as if I used a flat iron!

vidal sassoon x chictopia : syl's style

Hi guys,
It's been a long while & I've been feeling that nagging feeling when you neglect your poor blog for too long. We didn't mean for this to happen but there have been some major changes & a bit of moving around so we've been busy as heck. I knew eventually I would have to come back though...

Our friends at Chictopia sent us a set of amazing Vidal Sassoon Pro Series products to try out. I was impressed that we received full sized samples because sometimes with hair products, it does take more than a one or two time use to really get a feel for how it works for your hair in the long run.



I've always had a deep attachment with my hair... while for some people this means they become attached to the length, I prefer to think I'm more attached to how it makes me feel. The girlishness of long hair, the boldness of shaved hair and the eff-you of colourfully dyed hair. I've never been one afraid of a big change; on a whim, I'll snip some off, bleach it out, or shave some off. And after growing it for nearly 3 years without a cut or colour, I'm feeling pretty happy with where it is (for now).

What I Wore: j crew factory brass plated crystal necklace, l&b tee, danier leather blink varsity jacket, nasty gal collection solitaire high waisted jeans, miista chloe shoes.

My favourite product & the one that I used in these photos was the Vidal Sassoon Boost & Lift Foaming Air Mousse. One of my problems with my current hair is the limpness. Because I don't currently have many layers, my hair tends to get flat on top and frizzy at the ends. The mousse worked great for giving my hair a lift at the roots and the ends of my curls were smooth. I simply styled with a curling wand and I'm proud to say I can curl my entire head of hair in about 10 minutes tops now!

DIY Zipper Trousers

Been growing out my hair for two years. I snapped the other day. More pics later!

231: tutorial - top knot hair

So lately I've been doing my hair in this big fat bun on the top of my head.


Basically, I've been doing it because it's one of only 2 or 3 hairstyles that I can actually achieve with my weird lengths of hair. Seriously, I have been trying to grow out a hairstyle in which about 50% of my head was shaved bald!

The strange thing is, I feel like this is a pretty normal hairstyle but it's been getting a LOT of compliments from strangers. Maybe it's cause my bun is green. Maybe it's because it seems like I suddenly grew a shitload of hair. But people have been asking me how I do it... & I tell them there's a sock in there... & then my friend Suzanne goes & tells me to stop telling my "secrets" to everyone.

BUT I'M GONNA TELL YOU ANYWAY.
This tutorial is a two-parter so pay attention!

First make your "hair donut"...


Grab any sock that is close to your hair colour.
You can use any old sock. Seriously, look at this embarrassing ass sock, it's so linty.


then cut off the toe with some sharp scissors.


Now grab it from the end you just cut off & start rolling it up!


LIKE THIS.


So that you have a donut. AMAZING.
This calf-length sock makes a decent sized donut but if you want a gigantic bun, just get a longer sock.

PART TWOOOOO:


start with clean hair... actually, you can start with dirty hair cause it's easier to work with.


put your hair in a pony tail on top of your head.

This is the hardest part for me cause my hair is so short so it involves braiding the back of my hair while lying face down on my bed so I look like I'm planking. You can just do a normal ponytail.


Now take the hair donut you just made & slip it onto your ponytail! It's stretchy so it's easy to plop on there.


fan out your ponytail over the donut.


and then just tuck the remaining hair under the sock in a 'spiraling' sorta way. I dunno, just tuck it.


Then I just take another hair tie & loop it on over the base!
You can use bobby pins to keep it in place as well if your hair is longer.

Give it a quick hairspray & that's pretty much it! you now have a cinnamon bun on top of your head!


Woo hoo! Now it looks like you have luxuriously thick hair piled on there instead of a weak ass looped ponytail. yay!

168: livin just as free as my hair

A couple of weeks ago, Sam sent me a photo of Gaga at the Toronto airport... I was oh-so-tickled to see that she was rocking teal hair with black roots! It's a good look for everyone really ;)

142: the 90's called

... they want their hair back.

A few weeks ago, I was asking Sam why hair wraps stopped being in style. Do you remember friendship bracelets? Hair wraps were just when you wrapped your hair with embroidery thread. in the 90's, we were obsessed with everything to do with embroidery thread. for real. We spent hours & hours taking the thread & winding it onto these little cardboard spools to fit into a thread organizing box.

So I decided to waste an hour of my time & I "friendship braided" Sam's hair. Sweet throwback right?

130: cut the mullet

"Go to the barbershop & tell them you're sick of looking like an asshole"

Does anyone know what I'm referencing with the title & the quote? Tell me if you do & you'll be cool FOREVER in my books. NO GOOGLING.

OKAY, so I've been growing my hair out from a crazy undercut/shaved style & it's been difficult because the different lengths on my head make the growing out phase both slow & way ugly. I've been holding off going to the salon for months now (maybe 6 months?) and shaving the right side myself to at least keep some semblance of intention on my head.

But finally, with the weather warming up (can't cover it with a hat anymore) & my hair starting to truly look like a mullet, I caved. I went for a trim today so that my hair would look like a real haircut again!


the back was becoming longer than the sides and there was a lack of layering, so the back of my head was looking really flat :( Now, there's a wee bit of layering at the back and I've got a bit of poufyness back!


This side was overgrown & thin at the ends, but now it's like a jaw-grazing a-line cut again :)

I'm still committed to growing out my hair, but I needed an in-between cut so that I wouldn't look ugly forever. Now I'm hair-happy again... for now.

116: tutorial - diy flower crown

Now that the weather is starting to actually warm up here in Canada, I have been loving spring florals. In particular, I've been in love with the look of flower crowns. I'm not talking about a flower or two in your hair, but a FULL garden of flowers on your head. I love that it's very woodstock flower child & also super fashion forward :) Here's how I did it!


What I used:
- bunches of faux flowers
- garden wire
- wire cutters & pliers
- measuring tape
- (embroidery thread is shown but was not used)


I used a bunch of large full flowers


& some smaller little roses to fill spaces


measure your head (should be about 22-24 inches)
& cut a piece of wire a couple of inches longer than that


take the ends & 'interlock' them


then twist them together to form a closed loop


try your loop on your head!


then take your faux flowers & cut the stem off, leaving a bit of length. the faux flower stems are actually plastic covered wire, so they are great for bending & wrapping too!


take that cut flower & wrap the stem around your wire loop


& continue doing that one more flower at a time, twisting the stems around each other


you can stop at only half a crown & wear the flowers just on the front...


or keep going until the crown is filled.
Initially, I grabbed some green ribbon & embroidery thread thinking that I could wrap the wires (so they won't stab your head). Though I ended up bending the wires in a way that they were covered by other wires or bent away from your head.

I fear that our black hair may make the crown seem a bit more like a luau in hawaii than a flower child at woodstock, but still, I think it's cute. :)
