030: chinese new year prep

No outfit post for today-- we were too busy with prepping for the new year! Chinese New Year is under a week away & somehow there is always a million things to do beforehand.

I've figured out the way my culture works... food = love.
Yeah, it makes for horribly unhealthy people & really bad habits in terms of our relationships for food, but that's beside the point. Food is basically how we celebrate every special occasion too, so there is lots of New Year baking to be done! Well, I like to think of it all as "baking", but actually, all of our yummy treats are deep-fried. YIKES.

Today one of the things we made were deep fried butterfly cookies. They're thin, crispy cookies that are sugary, kinda funnel cake tasting & are basically made of flour & sugar deep fried. I've got a few photos of the process below:

these things that look like branding irons are the 'molds' for the cookies

first, dip the irons in the hot oil to warm them up. This prevents the batter from sticking to the irons.

after heating the irons, you dip them into the watery batter.

you need the irons to be heated so that the batter doesn't stay stuck on the it... but you don't want to heat the iron for too long, or you can end up just cooking a spot of the batter right in the bowl!

when you dip the batter into the hot oil, it bubbles a lot :)

and a couple of shakes should loosen it from the mold!

because they're so thin, you only need to fry it for a few seconds on each side
& then remove them from the oil when they're golden brown

voila!

More pics of new years treats later this week! but some outfits in the mix too :)

xo

[ETA: Mai just informed me that these cookies are called ROSETTES! AT LAST! & here's a great how-to on getting the cookies to fall off the iron. THANK YOU MAI!]

029: oh nuts.

Today I went to work & packed my bag with my DSLR camera, an extra lens, a speedlite flash, extra aa batteries and a quick charger for the batteries. Pretty heavy load... the moment I turned my camera on to take a picture of my outfit-- NO CARD. Major case of FML.

Do you ever do silly things like that? I always end up leaving my SD card inserted in my laptop & I never realize until it's too late! BOO.

So at work today I just snapped some random pictures with a webcam.

my new glasses from clearlycontacts.ca arrived B-)

and I tried on this funny necklace I found in the shop!
It's a gold chain finished with... TWO NUTS. WHAT?! insanity.

I'm a bit slow on this trend, I guess, but I've been obsessed with button-up shirts buttoned ALL the way up. It's just so preppy & compleeeeetely the opposite of how I've dressed my whole life. I've always worn the tightest possible, lowest possible necklines. I even went to a catholic uniform high school & always got in trouble for having too many buttons undone on my white dress-shirt (revealing brightly coloured tanks underneath). So I'm not sure what attracts me to it-- maybe just the fact that I've never worn things like this before. I'm hoping that this year I'll finally step outside of my 'box' and try to expand my wardrobe in a different direction.

I think that tomorrow I might be doing some Chinese New Year baking at home, but I might throw on this entire outfit again just so I can snap some shots of it. Do you guys ever do that? When you know you'll be seeing different people, so you wear the exact same outfit a second time? LOL, I suppose I'm letting the cat out of the bag by posting this. OH WELL.

xoxo

I caved. I shaved the side of my head again. GAH!
I'm supposed to be growing this haircut out but it's getting to be a bit tedious. My plan is to keep my right side shaved while I grow the rest of my shaved parts out. We'll see how it goes-- the plan makes sense in my head, haha.

seven things about me:
1. I studied Chemical Engineering in University. haha
2. I used to teach sunday school (and tutor at kumon!).
3. I eat way more than you would expect. It's actually pretty gross. Let's have an eating competition.
4. I have had every crazy hair colour in the rainbow
5. My most hated body parts are my legs.
6. I love tv. Every horrible show ever is my favourite.

026: cross your legs

So this is my first post since day 21. Holy smokes, WOOLCOME back Sam!
ahah, Syl's been so useful with her tutorials...me not so much. I'm not very good with tutorials, I don't know if I'd be a very good teacher. I've done tutoring and all but who knows if the students walked away confused. =\

Anyways, while Syl was busy playing teacher...I was busy drafting & sewing =)
Good times eh? I think so because I'm pretty happy with the result! I've been wanting to make some leggings with neat panels and colourblocks lately. It's like I just dream of them all the time. Sad. So yeah, I was wondering what would look cute but I didn't want anything too boring or over the top. So I thought that since we're on that whole cross obsession...why not make leggings that look like you just have a big cross on your legs? I was able to start these last night as I listened to the Toronto Maple Leafs lose another game. Then I added the elastic waistband this morning, had Syl help me out with pictures, and I have them posted up for sale!! I thought of several different looks but this is ONE that I really liked. I might try out my other ideas in the near future but for now I have these:

Bamboo Rayon Cross Leggings

I think they're pretty cute. It was a bit difficult for me to figure out the positioning of the cross since we don't really have Judy's/bodyforms to work on. Hello...I'm Judy! *pins fabric onto my own legs* haha anyways...I'm actually content with the positioning and they turned out just the way I was expecting them to! It has the half and half look with the horizontal line intersecting in a great spot. What do you think? Do you like them? Hate them? If any of you have interest in purchasing these amazing leggings: check out Lipgloss & Black & Lipgloss & Black's Etsy I only have one small available but I am planning on making more sizes in the future, or maybe even having them available for custom ordering.

Moving on, outfit sharing time! <3

Urban Behaviour Ruffled Tank, Urban Behaviour Chain/Fringe/Studded Vest, Cross Leggings by Lipgloss & Black, Jeffrey Campbell's Raid Wedges

Syl's Turban Toque, NEW Derek Cardigan cat eye frames-they have a division sign on one side & a multiplication sign on the other! OH YEAH and equal signs on the arms! They're from Clearly Contacts and are now my favourite glasses.

Cupcake Tray necklace by http://www.etsy.com/shop/Candychick. Candice is amazing, check out her Etsy shop!

XXI gem ring & L&B cross ring
Have a great night everyone! xoxo

025: if you want to destroy my sweater

I'm not sure what it is, but I have always had an appreciation for the beauty in ugliness. Of course, I can appreciate "classic beauty" or beauty that mainstream media presents to us... but I have always found the real interesting things aesthetically to be the things that were different. Kind of like when people say that the best parts of music are the silences-- the contrast is necessary.

This is a bit of a vague statement but I am basically just getting at this: I love the destroyed look. Shredded tees & now shredded knits are sooo gorgeous. I have done a few shredded tees but I wanted to give sweaters a try. I own absolutely ZERO warm clothes (funny for a canadian gal) so I picked up a new cable knit sweater.

the shorter front hem style that I love oh-so-much.

I was just wearing the sweater with the jeans that I had on... ideally though, it would look best styled with something contrasting-- like sleek leather shorts .

Try it out! Of course, I'm expecting people to tell me that I've got a pull in my sweater (likely the same people that tell me that I have runs in my stockings) but embrace the uniqueness. no one's sweater will be exactly like yours ♥

024: tutorial - tuque to turban

I've been getting a lot of questions about where I got one of my "turbans" that I'm wearing in a photo I have on facebook. I really just wrapped a huge scarf on my head & went about my business, but if you guys are into turbans & turbands as much as I am, I'll show you a quick way to modify a tuque!

my ombre floppy tuque. cute but I've got too many of these.

take a piece of elastic and stretch it out to the MAXIMUM & cut about the length of the whole hat.

flip your hat inside out & pin the elastic to the center of the front... pin at the bottom point & at the top.

sew the strip of elastic on the wrong side of the toque.
STRETCH the elastic to the max while sewing.

now the inside of the tuque should look like this!

flip it back right side out & it should be gathered nicely along the front

ta-da! my tuque was quite deep, so I just fold in a couple of inches so it's tucked up in my hat when I wear it. It's warmer that way too :)

Try it out! Make those floppy toques way more stylish! These look so great with a big brooch on the front too :) & you can remove the single strip of elastic if you ever get sick of it.
