006: four eyes

Recently, my boyfriend Matt has been looking for new glasses. He's realized his prescription has worsened a bit & needs a pair for wearing on an everyday basis. This is a pretty huge step for most people-- to be totally plain-faced & then trying to get used to something totally foreign on your face all the time.

His first pair of glasses were super plain, brassy coloured frames that were just... there. I called them "first glasses" because for everyone I know who has glasses, they had a dreaded first pair. They aren't necessarily bad, they are just some default glasses that you let the lady at the glasses-shop talk you into. They don't know your personality so they convince you that the plainest boring-est thing is the best.

Now, Matt's looking for a pair with more personality but nothing too dominating with his blond hair & blue eyes (all the thick frames can tend to look waaay too heavy). We're having a hell of a time though trying to find something suitable.

Anyhow, it got me thinking about all the glasses I've had since my first pair, so I decided to document all of them for you! Hopefully we'll do Sam's glasses soon as well... I'm quite sure that her collection might even outnumber mine.

in backwards chronological order
right to left/top to bottom:
Joseph Marc 4034 in Transparent, Polo Ralph Lauren 2027 in Black/Clear,
Zenni Frames in Purple Plaid (discontinued?), Zenni 228123 in White and Clear,
Zenni 228121 in Black and Clear, Ray Ban RB5121 Classic Wayfarer in Black,
Jai Kudo - Unknown, My First Glasses (oh god).

I couldn't even keep a straight face when taking the pics for my "first glasses". What a horrible choice. I guess it's true that round glasses make a round face look rounder. lol

Not pictured: a pair I had in first year university that got knocked off my face & stomped to death in a moshpit. sad times, for realsies. ahahaha.

Glasses are a huge part of my everyday life. I used to have contacts & had a bit of an incident with them where my corneas were scratched and I had perma-blurry vision. So that steered me away from contacts for a while :( I find that because of my glasses, I need to put on my eye makeup heavier & also avoid over-accessorizing my head and neck!

So are you a glasses wearer? Are you a fellow plastic glasses lover? Do you think there are rules that need to be followed for picking the right frames for your face?

xoxo

  1. i like your collection of glasses! your first pair aren't too bad. i don't even want to know what i look like in my first pair now. it's been almost 11 or 12 years since i've had to wear those. haha!

i'm definitely a fan of plastic frames although i don't have a defined bridge so it's hard to keep the frames on my face. :(

  2. Your first pair makes you look like a totally different person!

It took me a long time to get a pair of glasses that matched my personality. I spent several years with various pairs that could be described as "generic Asian kid" glasses. I had at least one pair that were the metal gold colored ones.

The first pair that I got that I liked still looked weird on my face. My boyfriend's mom told him that I shouldn't wear round glasses because they made my face look rounder. So, with my current pair, I set out for square ones.

I scored an awesome pair (Langstons) from warby parker. Now I've made the switch to glasses mostly, with contacts occasionally.

  3. Katrina, there's always a way to make plastic frames work! Most of my old frames worked decently as they were & just brushed my eyelashes a bit. But my polo frames are mens & so they're really front heavy on my face & would slip down sooo much. I had nosepads put on them (which apparently are only $30 or $40 to do at any glasses place) and now they stay up on my nose & off of my lashes :D
So consider the option next time you are shopping for glasses :)

Stef, Isn't it funny how the shape makes my face look so round?! I suppose it is true that the shape of your glasses really changes how your face looks. The size really seems to make a difference too. Now that I look at the photos, it seems that large square glasses make my face look more dainty (?!) than smaller square glasses.

Thanks for telling me about Warby Parker! Now I'm obsessed! That site is so cute and aaaaall the frames look amazing. :) xox

  4. I've been thinking about buying a new pair of glasses online, but I've been hesitating. How do you know which frames will look best? Which online store do you like?

  5. Great topic! Loving this new years resolution! Wish I could keep up and post daily too, but laziness kicks my bum! :P

You're right! Glasses really add to a persons personality. People always ask me why I don't wear contacts. My answer is that I'm not me without glasses. They really have become a part of my appearance and personality. In Japan, I loved how cheap the glasses were! I bought 4 pairs while I was there. :)

  6. Leja, We typically just order from Zennioptical.com because it's the cheapest. It makes it really easy to buy glasses as 'back-up' pairs when they're under $20! Usually, they give you measurements for everything (like the lengths, widths etc) and you can compare the measurements to a current pair of yours for scale. Otherwise, they just introduced a "try on" function where you can take a face similar to yours and put the glasses on it digitally. lol, we use the asian girl face.

Shell, THANKS FOR READING ♥ !!! Yeah, it's pretty much the first thing they look at when they talk to you right? And eventually people see your glasses on your face so much that you look naked without them! I wish they were cheap here! We got an estimate on some glasses at Lenscrafters and they're like $500+! WHAT!
